Question titled:
What were the political goals of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and how successful was their use of violence?
This essay is from a third-year undergraduate assignment, for a module entitled 'Terrorism and Counterterrorism'. It explores the political goals of the Provisional IRA, with reference to the history of the organisations and its predecessors. It further explains the tactics that the Provisional IRA utilised in pursuit of these political goals, and analysed how successful their use of violence was. Ultimately concluding that the Provisional IRA's use of violence, whilst effective in terms of creating a culture of fear, were not successful in achieving their political aims of a united Ireland.
